My Favorite Vegan Body Lotion by Derma E

Derma E Vegan and Cruelty Free Body Lotion Review by Los Angeles Beauty Blogger My Beauty Bunny

Derma E – Cruelty Free and Vegan Body Lotion Review

It took me WAY longer than it should to find out that Derma E also had body and hair products in addition to their skincare. Where have I been? I guess busy with other things, but talk about a nice surprise! Derma E makes some fabulous skincare products that I reach for often so exploring their different categories was almost a MUST. Aside from body wash, body lotion is another must for me so trying out Derma E Body Lotion only made sense as the perfect place to start.

All Derma E Body Lotions are cruelty free and vegan. They also contain no soy, gluten or lanolin, making it a safer option for those with intolerances. They offer five different options depending on what you’re looking for, and I narrowed it down to three that I thought I would personally enjoy: Vitamin E Fragrance Free Therapeutic Body Lotion,Rosehip & Almond Protecting Shea Body Lotion  and Jasmine & Vanilla Hydrating Shea Body Lotion.

The therapeutic versions are rich in vitamin E and antioxidants to dramatically repair and strengthen dry, flaky skin. My skin isn’t flaky, but elbows and knees need extra care. The remaining body lotions work great for day to day use and include shea butter in their formula which quickly absorbs into the skin. These are great for locking in moisture after your bath or shower.

Derma E - Cruelty Free and Vegan Body Lotion Review

I found all formulas to be thicker like a cream but spreadable and lightweight like a lotion. I used them after the shower, and sometimes before I took photos so my skin to looked a bit healthier. You can’t beat a flip top cap which is a lot safer to transport than pump bottles and avoid spills. My skin was HUNGRY for moisture and soaked these babies up with minimal rubbing in. I love thick creams but not when they just sit on top of the skin and take forever to sink in.

My favorite one is definitely the Jasmine & Vanilla Hydrating lotion. The scent is beautiful and not too strong. It also leaves my legs feeling really nice and smooth and not greasy. The Rosehip & Almond one has a very faint scent that I can almost barely detect.

You can find Derma E at ULTA, Whole Foods and even CVS and they cost less than $13 a tube.

Victoria Street – Lined with brightly-colored storefronts and historic buildings, this curved street is worth a visit when you find yourself in Edinburgh’s old town area. Home to a variety of independent shops selling everything from clothes to fine cheeses, you can easily spend hours wandering from store to store, picking up souvenirs and capturing interesting moments and perspectives with your camera. This street is rumored to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley of Harry Potter fame, so if you’re a fan of the books, it’s especially worth a visit!

Lexli – Cruelty Free Skincare for Acne and Anti-Aging

Lexli Aloe Vera Based Cruelty Free Skincare Review

Lexli Aloe Vera Based Cruelty Free Skincare for Acne and Anti-Aging

Hey bunnies! I’m excited to tell you about a new cruelty free, Leaping Bunny certified skincare brand that I discovered recently. It’s called Lexli and all of the products are based on the healing powers of pharmaceutical grade aloe vera.

Many skincare products have aloe as an ingredient, but Lexli uses organic, high grade, impurity-free aloe as a base. That’s an important distinction, because small amounts of aloe aren’t going to be very useful for your skin. You can see that aloe is the first ingredient in these products (skincare ingredient lists are ranked by order of concentration).

Lexli uses aloe that has been certified by the International Aloe Science Council (IASC). This means that the aloe has been properly harvested and processed to ensure the highest quality. Lexli says that this is very important because aloe’s active ingredients begin to decompose and lose their effectiveness soon after harvesting if not handled properly.

So what’s the big deal with aloe? Well it penetrates the skin easily, helps to stop inflammation, regenerates damaged skin cells (which is why people use it after a sunburn), and it even helps to control acne (it contains salicylic acid, saponin and barbaloin which kill acne bacteria).

Lexli has combined aloe vera with acne-fighting and anti-aging ingredients to create skincare regimens for all skin types. I’m focusing on the acne-busting and anti-aging products for this review since those are the two areas of concern for me!

Lexli Aloe Vera Acne Cleanser Review

Let’s start with Lexli’s Acne Cleanser. The formula is aloe-based, of course. They have also added salicylic acid, sulfur, witch hazel, niacinamide, Vitamin A and several other vitamins. It has a unique look and feel – it’s a slight orange-y color and it’s packaged in a glass jar. You take a nickel-sized amount, and you’ll notice right away that the consistency is thick. Once you rub it into your hands (and your face), you’ll see that it spreads easily and although it doesn’t foam up, it does create a lather. After using it my face felt very clean, pores smaller, and skin matte (no shine or oil). This is a wonderful cleanser for oily, acne-prone skin. If your skin is sensitive and/or dry (like mine) and also acne-prone, you may want to try Lexli’s Cleansing Lotion, or alternate between the two for best results.

Lexli Acne Clarifying Lotion Review

The Acne Clarifying Lotion is my favorite product out of the bunch! It’s an aloe-based lotion with an impressive array of ingredients for acne/oil-control, skin renewal, hydration and inflammation. The highlights are: salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, zinc pyrithione, green tea, witch hazel, arnica, pomegranate extract, allantoin, chamomile, ginkgo biloba, Vitamin B5 and lavender oil. This is a really nice formula that doesn’t irritate my skin, and keeps me clear! I put it on and then wait about five minutes for it to absorb before I put on a moisturizer. I use it all over to prevent breakouts from forming, but if you have mild acne, you can also use this as a spot treatment. If your skin gets too dry, just use it every other day until you get used to it. My only complaint is that I wish they’d put it in a pump dispenser instead of a glass jar.

Lexli Aloe Vera Skincare Products for Anti Aging and Acne

Lexli Daily Moisturizer for Oily Skin is a great moisturizing option for my oily babes! If your skin is very oily, or if you live in a very humid environment, you still need to give your face some hydration. This product is perfect because it leave your skin feeling very clean without any oil. Because of the aloe vera, it feels slightly heavy at first, but trust me – it dries completely. Your skin will drink it up and you’ll be left with a matte canvas – it wears well under makeup.

There were a couple of products I wanted to mention, even though I can’t use them because I’m allergic to Vitamin C. I think Vitamin C is such a great, powerful anti-aging ingredient, and I’m sad that I can’t use it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t! I tested these on my fiancé, Gregg, and his skin did really well with them. The A-Firm-Ative anti-aging peptide serum is a great wrinkle-fighting booster to use underneath your moisturizer. It has peptides, antioxidants, arnica, and hydrating ingredients, and is suitable for all skin types.

Lexli Aloe Vera Anti Aging Skincare Review

I tell just about everyone that they can benefit from alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid (my favorite). Lexli’s AloeGlyC is a very powerful nighttime exfoliator. It contains aloe (of course!), glycolic acid, salicylic acid, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, green tea, allantoin and jojoba oil. This is a really nice blend of exfoliating and hydrating ingredients. If it’s a little strong for you, try mixing it with your moisturizer. I can’t use this one because of the Vitamin C (I’m allergic) but based on my results in testing it on Gregg, I’d recommend this one for anyone with dull skin, fine lines, acne scars or spots.

Lexli Sunscreen Spray Review

Always use sunscreen to prevent premature aging and skin cancer. But when you’re using active ingredients like AHAs, you REALLY have to use sunscreen religiously (or you could make lines and spots worse). Lexli has several broad spectrum SPF options. I tried the Sunscreen Spray, and I like it for daily, indoor use. It’s non-greasy and is water and sweat-resistant. But for outdoor use, I would suggest an SPF of 30 or higher. Try the Day Moisturizer with SPF 30 if you’re using active ingredients or if you’ll be outdoors for extended lengths of time.

Lexli products all have a fresh, gender-neutral scent. All of these products are Leaping Bunny certified cruelty free and paraben free, and many are vegan. The Daily Moisturizer for Oily Skin and A-Firm-Ative contains silk amino acids and some products contain soluble collagen. All ingredients are listed on the website.

Overall, I’m really impressed with these cruelty free skincare products! The Acne Cleanser and Acne Clarifying Lotion are my absolute favorites, and I think you’ll love them too!

Stila Stay All Day – Bold Lipstick Shades for Fall

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick Review

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick – Bold Lipstick Shades for Fall

I don’t know about you Bunnies, but I have Fall Fever! It’s still hot here in Los Angeles, although cooling down a little. But I am ready for horror movies, pumpkin spice everything, cozy sweaters and fireplaces (not that I own one but hey…). I am also thinking about my upcoming October wedding and honeymoon in the UK, and what makeup shades I will be wearing while I’m there. Stila has released some new Stay All Day liquid lipstick shades and they are PERFECT for Fall!

The Stay All Day liquid lipstick formula is a creamy matte, enriched with Vitamin E and avocado oil. It’s got a cult following because the shades are highly pigmented, yet quite wearable.

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick Fall Shades

The six, recently released warm and Fall-friendly shades are:

Fia (Neutral nude)
Vino (Deep blood red)
Siena (Deep dusty brown rose)
Lido (Deep warm nude)
Forza (Deep burgundy)
Palermo (Warm terracotta nude)

Stila Siena Lipstick Swatch

Stila Palermo Lip Swatch

Stila Vino Lipstick Swatch

I’ve swatched Siena, Palermo and Vino above. Siena and Palermo are definitely shades I can pull off. They are warm and inviting and will definitely go with a good contour, some bronzer and a simple earthy eye look. I found them easy to apply and easy to wear. I just had to make sure I didn’t press my lips together until they were dry. Vino is a wine shade which I can pretty much never pull off. I found it bled a little more than the others and was a bit more patchy which is the case with every wine I’ve ever tried (liquid, stick, balm – it’s always like that in my experience). My lips are really dry right now, so all brands of lipsticks are bleeding, which is a new problem for me!

Also side note – in the lip swatch of Siena (first one above), you can see that I added a layer to my bottom lip and took the pic before it dried. I can’t say I did that on purpose (oops), BUT it shows how the lipstick looks when applied wet and how it looks when dried down. For the Palermo and Vino swatches, they were slightly wet – not quite dried down but not fresh either. So let’s pretend I did that on purpose, eh?

Aveda Nourish Mint Lip Balm

Liquid lipsticks are always drying for me, but these are on the more hydrating side of that spectrum. I found that they wore really easily over lip balm. I really like Aveda Feed My Lips Pure Nourish-Mint, and I was surprised to see the Stila lippies adhered nicely to it.

Overall I’m impressed with the formula, ease of use (except for the wine shades), comfort, longevity and pigmentation. I can see why these are cult faves! Which color is your favorite?

Top 5 Instagram Friendly Spots In London

Top 5 Instagram Friendly Spots in London

Top 5 Instagram Friendly Spots in London

I cannot wait for my upcoming wedding (in Edinburgh) and honeymoon in London! As one of the most well-known cities in the world, it’s no surprise to learn that London is one of the most photographed cities, too. Boasting a rich history and incredible architecture, there are endless opportunities to capture moments with your camera – but there are some spots that rise above the rest, especially if you’re hoping to share your London experience on social media.

Whether you’re planning a vacation to London or you’re a local on the hunt for the best places to snap a memorable photo, you can’t leave these Instagram friendly spots off of your itinerary!

Coppa Club. Situated on the banks of the Thames, the Tower Bridge location of this upscale restaurant chain offers up some of the best food – and photo opps – you’ll find in London. Visit during the summer months, and you can take advantage of their Paradise Pods, open-air domes encompassed by palm fronds and draped in flowering plants to embrace the warmer weather. When winter rolls around, the space is transformed, and clear domes replace the pods to offer diners a picturesque experience, protected from the elements.

Portobello Road. The brightly-painted homes that line this street are eye-catching enough to make an amazing Instagram photo, but if you wait until the weekend, you’ll be treated to an even more exciting scene. The Portobello Road Market is busiest on Fridays and Saturdays, adding tons of interesting photo-worth elements. And if you’re on the hunt for some souvenirs, the market considers itself the largest antique market in the world, so you’re sure to uncover some interesting finds if you take the time to browse the stall!

Top 5 Instagram Friendly Spots in London

Tower Bridge. One of the most recognized landmarks of London, you’re sure to make everyone back home jealous with a perfect photo of Tower Bridge. It can be challenging to snap a good shot of the bridge while you’re standing on it, so for the best Instagram photo possible, see what kind of angles you can capture from the nearby walkways and riverbanks. Tower Wharf is a great place to shoot from, as are the St. Katharine Docks. There, you’ll find a few interesting sculptures you can incorporate into the foreground of your shot.

The Churchill Arms. It can feel like there are an infinite number of picturesque storefronts and pubs across London, but the Churchill Arms really goes above and beyond to impress. During the summer months, you’ll be wowed by the incredible floral displays that cover the pub’s exterior. When the holiday season arrives, the pub takes an over-the-top approach, skipping the holly and garlands and opting to cover the building’s exterior with actual Christmas trees instead.

Any red telephone booth. While you can’t actually use one to call friends and family back home, you can’t pass over an opportunity to snap a selfie standing next to – or inside – one of these iconic London landmarks. There are many of these booths scattered across the city, so it shouldn’t be too hard to check this one off of your list, but if you choose your phone booth carefully, you’ll get a way more memorable photo. Find the phone booths on Great George Street to squeeze a glimpse of Big Ben into your shot, making your classic London photo even better.

Wherever you go in London, you’re sure to find an incredible photo to take. However, these spots are sure to land you Instagram-worthy shots you’ll be excited to share with friends and family. What spot sounds the most exciting to you? What spots should I visit during my honeymoon this October? Leave a comment and let me know!

Create Your Own Cruelty Free Lipstick at Bite Lip Lab

Bite Beauty Lip Lab Los Angeles Bespoke Cruelty Free Lipstick

Bite Beauty Lip Lab Los Angeles Bespoke Cruelty Free Lipstick

A couple days ago, I was invited, along with other Los Angeles beauty editors, to visit a magical place…a place where you can make your own custom cruelty free lipstick!! Until now Bite Beauty Labs were only in New York, San Francisco and Toronto, but I’m excited to announce there is now a new Bite Beauty Lab in Los Angeles!

Most of you are probably familiar with Bite Beauty – they are the ones that make those agave lip scrubs, and a line of beautiful lipsticks, liners, crayons, glosses and more. If you haven’t tried them yet, get your booty over to a Sephora, forthwith!

Bite Beauty Lip Lab Los Angeles Bespoke Cruelty Free Lipstick

Bite Beauty Lip Lab Los Angeles Bespoke Cruelty Free Lipstick But listen – here’s why I’m REALLY excited about the Lip Lab… If you have a NON-cruelty-free lipstick that you love and can’t find a dupe for, just bring it in to the lab and see if you can match it! After they mix up the color for you, they will keep the recipe on file and you can purchase it again anytime! The Bite lipsticks are highly pigmented and very moisturizing. They come in several finishes and scents.

Bite Beauty Lip Lab Los Angeles Bespoke Cruelty Free Lipstick for my Wedding

Anywho…I was excited to go experience the Bite Beauty Lip Lab in Larchmont for myself, to make a couple of my own bespoke lipsticks! Josh helped me blend up my first creation, which was a peachy pink shade that I plan to wear to my wedding in a couple months. It was pretty easy to mix up a perfect nude with my choice of finish (matte) that went well with my complexion. Then I even got to engrave it with my wedding date (10/21) and add a custom fragrance (I chose mint and citrus mango because my fiancé will love that scent).

Bite Beauty Lip Lab Los Angeles Bespoke Cruelty Free Lipstick for My Beauty Bunny

The second color I picked was a cool fuchsia pink. If I’m going to get a nude, I also want to go in a different direction and get something really fun! For that one, I engraved it with My Beauty Bunny’s initials (MBB) and I chose a violet + mint scent (which I LOVE!). The color I ended up with is actually pretty close to one of Bite’s regular shades called Dragonfruit. I think mine is a hair cooler and darker.

After we picked the colors, tried them on, and made sure I was happy with them, Josh poured the pigments into the mold, froze them for a few minutes, and then popped them out into the lipstick tubes! It was really fun to watch, and hopefully you guys saw the videos in my Instagram stories.

Bite Beauty Lipstick Swatches

Bite Beauty also sent me on my way with several lip products, which I have swatched for you guys.

Top two liquid lipsticks – Chiffonade and Yucca

Three glosses left side middle row – French Press, Vanilla Latte, Dirty Chai

Three lipsticks right side middle row – Saffron Fire, Chai, Crushed Chili

My bespoke lipsticks left side bottom row – MBB and 10/21

Three lip crayons right side bottom row – Black Truffle, Sugarcane (the perfect liner to go with my bespoke nude!), Glace

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask Review

They also gave me a sample set of their amazing agave lip care products, including the Agave Lip Balm, Agave Lip Scrub and give Agave Lip Masks (natural, champagne, smashed, maple and lavender). These tinted lip masks are perfect for my low thyroid-induced SUPER dried and chapped lips! The new Lavender lip mask has a relaxing lavender scent for nighttime, and it also has a purple cast which can make your teeth look whiter!

Anyone can walk in and get their own custom lipsticks at the Bite Beauty Lip Lab! I would recommend getting an appointment if possible just to make sure there’s no wait – they do get busy from what I hear. The cost for two bespoke lipsticks (that you create) is $150. You can also choose a color that is pre-mixed along with your choice of finish and and scent for $55 (or two for $80). They even do private events, which would make a really fun graduation or bachelorette party!

My Second SculpSure Body Contouring Treatment at LaserXX

Upper Abdomen SculpSure Treatment at LaserXX - Review

Upper Abdomen SculpSure Treatment at LaserXX – Review

Hey bunnies! Recently I told you about the SculpSure body contouring treatments I’ve been doing at LaserXX in preparation for my wedding (t-minus two months to go!). I had my second treatment today, and I wanted to give you an update.

The first time, I had my lower abdomen (AKA my lower belly roll – right above my belly button) treated. Today I had my upper abdomen (happy little roll number two) treated. I’ve lost 3 or 4 pounds since my first treatment (and it’s been about two weeks). I haven’t changed anything in terms of diet or exercise during that time. I have one hard nodule on my right side – if you press your fingers into my belly you can feel it, but you can’t see it or anything. The LaserXX team told me that was normal, and that it’s not permanent, and to keep drinking lots of water and massaging twice a day.

Sandra and the rest of the staff, and Dr. Berdjis, are so nice and made me feel so welcome. They put three brackets on me this time – two on the lower area of my upper midsection and one under that (right under my rib cage). The treatment seemed more painful this time, in this area. I’m not sure if it’s just a more sensitive part of my body or if it has to do with how much fat is in each area (pretty sure I have a lot in both places but hey…). I did have an energy drink in the morning (had to get up early to go to a Bite Beauty Lip Lab event, which I highly recommend by the way!), so I may have been dehydrated. I asked the doc to give me a break about half way through. Then he turned it down a bit for the remainder of the 25 minutes. He reminded me that I’m always in control and can tell him if I need it turned up or down (or paused) at any time. The doctor and his staff stayed with me the whole time to make sure I was okay.

Upper Abdomen SculpSure Treatment at LaserXX - Review

Afterwards, they showed me some VERY impressive before and afters from previous clients. I was impressed with the results some patients saw after one treatment alone. It will take several weeks to see some results and about three months total for me to REALLY see results, so I will keep you updated on my progress as I go!

Dexa Scan at LaserXX Medical in Los Angeles

Dexa Scan at LaserXX Medical in Los Angeles

After the treatment, they gave me a Dexa Scan, which is the gold standard for measuring body fat, lean muscle and bone density. I had never had one of these done before, so it was interesting to see the results (and hopefully to see how they will change over time). My bone density is really good, but my fat to muscle ratios are not great. I’m going to keep working out and eating right, while I do these SculpSure treatments and I hope to see some changes in the near future!

If you want to try it, I highly recommend LaserXX. Pricing is about $400 for each bracket (or $1600 for all four). It’s not a cheap procedure, but it’s A LOT cheaper and safer than liposuction! LaserXX often runs specials – so make sure to follow them on Instagram and Facebook! Stop by and tell them Jen from My Beauty Bunny said hi!

New Sephora Favorites from Urban Decay, Becca and Hourglass

Becca Be a Light Palette Review

Question of the Week: Let’s say you won a $100 Sephora gift card. What would you buy?

If I won a $100 Sephora gift card, I’d definitely pick up some newly released makeup! I think Sephora is a little weak on skincare and very weak on hair products. But they have some of the best makeup brands.

Urban Decay Lo Fi Lip Mousse Review

If you’re thinking about doing some shopping, I highly recommend the new Urban Decay Lo-Fi Lip Mousse. It’s a creamy lippie that you can apply straight to your lips with your finger (or a brush if you want to be precise). It comes in eight very wearable shades. You can apply a sheer layer or add on a thicker, more pigmented layer depending on your look. I LOVE that we’re getting away from the ultra precise, “need a fine arts degree to apply” type of makeup. I prefer things to be a little more natural, more smudged and a little wild and messy. Sure you can apply this with a lip brush and get an ultra-precise look, but where’s the fun in that?

Becca Be a Light Palette Review

Becca Be a Light Palette - Light to Medium - Review and Swatches

Becca Be a Light Medium to Deep Palette Review

If you have warm (or yellow) undertones, you’ll want to pick up one of the Becca Be A Light Face Palettes. Each one comes with a brightening powder which can be used all over, a blur powder (bronzer), a contour and a marbelized blush. You can use all of these as eyeshadows as well, so this is a nice summer travel palette. They come in “Light to Medium” and “Medium to Deep.” I’m actually really surprised with how light the lighter palette is – almost too light for my pale olive skin. It would be great for very pale skin with warm or olive undertones. The darker palette is really for medium skin tones – I can rock the lightest shade (brightening powder) as a blush now, and could get away with the other tones if I use a very light hand or get a tan. I personally think they need one more with darker, redder shades for deep skin tones. If you have acne, fine lines, wrinkles or textured skin, you’ll appreciate that these powders are matte (except for the blush), and actually help to blur your skin and give it an airbrushed look. Shimmery or glittery products will do the opposite.

Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash Mascara Review

With the rest of a $100 Sephora gift card, I’d recommend trying out the new Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash Mascara. If you like BOLD lashes, this is the mascara for you! It’s an extreme fiber mascara, which means it gives major length and volume, but it can get clumpy if you apply too much, so take your time with application, apply a small amount by wiggling from base to tip (use more than one coat if you need to), and use a mascara comb to take out any clumps. You can use the tapered tip to get those tiny lashes on the interior and exterior corners, and then use whatever is left on the wand to coat your bottom lashes. It’s also VERY black – so it really stands out. Definitely not for the timid! Oh and it’s cruelty free AND vegan! If you hadn’t heard, Hourglass will be going completely vegan in 2020!

Health Focus: My Anti-Aging Favorites from QOL Supplements

Quality of Life Supplements Favorites by Health Blogger My Beauty Bunny

Health Focus: Some of my Anti-Aging Favorites from Quality of Life Supplements

Beauty bunnies! I discovered some great health and beauty supplements that I want to tell you about, but first, if you haven’t already, I urge you to read my philosophy on nutritional supplements (why I take them, how to tell if they’re quality or garbage, etc, etc.).

Okay, now that you’ve read that, let’s talk about this brand I discovered several months ago called QOL (Quality of Life). I first ran across QOL when I was fighting off a nasty cold and looking for some immune system boosting supplements on Amazon. I bought their AHCC Gold (made from medicinal mushrooms), and although I can’t say for sure if it shortened the duration of my cold (I was taking my tried and true Samento along with other herbs – not trying to do a science experiment – just trying to feel BETTER!), I was certainly intrigued by the brand. After seeing my Instagram story about their product, QOL offered to send me some other products to try out. I selected several that piqued my interest, and tested them for about a month and a half. Let me tell you about the ones that I really like.

There are basically two types of supplements – ones that have IMMEDIATE effects and ones that have long-term effects. Sometimes the long-term supplements require a leap of faith because the results are not easily measured, or they may be preventative in nature (a probiotic or multi-vitamin for example). More about that here.

QOL Sustained Release Melatonin Review - Some of my Favorites from Quality of Life Supplements

Let’s start with a supplement from QOL that had an immediate positive effect for me – Melatonin-SR. This sustained release melatonin helps to put you to sleep and keep you asleep for up to seven hours. I have been taking melatonin for many years as a natural sleep aid. I don’t even travel without my melatonin – it’s great for jet lag since you can use it to sleep on the plane, or get to sleep in any time zone. I know some people (like my fiancé) say melatonin makes them sleepy but then they wake up after a few hours. This sustained release version of melatonin is designed to fix exactly that problem. I found that it kept me asleep and I didn’t wake up with a groggy feeling. Melatonin is something your body makes naturally, and taking it is not supposed to be habit-forming. Melatonin is not for everyone, but I love it and I know a lot of others do too. Like with ALL supplements, consult your health care practitioner first, then start with a small dose and see how it makes you feel.

Oligonol Lychee Polyphenol Extract - Some of my Favorites from Quality of Life Supplements

The next supplement is one that has long term effects. It’s called Oligonol and it’s a polyphenol derived from lychee fruit and green tea extract. There have been studies to suggest that it may have an effect on cardiovascular health, reducing belly fat, lessening fatigue, increasing endurance during exercise and reducing skin wrinkles and brown spots. Talk about a supplement that most people would want, right? Although there are several published studies for this supplement, many of them were done with small numbers of subjects, so keep that in mind.

That being said, the research for polyphenols in general is solid. Polyphenols are found in foods like coffee, green tea, pomegranate, blueberries, chocolate and red cabbage. They help to fight excess free radicals, lower inflammation, and increase BDNF (which helps you grow new brain cells). Polyphenols also feed some of your gut bacteria called Bacteroidetes. Studies have shown a positive correlation between thin people and a ratio of higher Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes. Researchers have also found these imbalances in obese people (they tend to have fewer Bacteroidetes). You can take Firmicutes (such as Lactobacillus) in cultured food or supplement form but to get more Bacteroidetes, you need to provide them with the food they enjoy – polyphenols!

I’ve been taking Oligonol for about a month now and my skin is looking great. I’m not ready to say that’s a direct effect of the supplement (too many variables with recent hormone shifts, skincare, facials, etc.). BUT, I am going to continue to take Oligonol because I see a lot of promise, with no downsides (other than cost). I’ve been trying to lose weight for  along time, so give me all the Bacteroidetes!

QOL CardioChol Review - Some of my Favorites from Quality of Life Supplements

Another QOL supplement that my fiancé really likes it CardioChol. He had a near miss with a heart attack at a very young age, so we are not taking any chances with this health. CardioChol contains plant phytosterols, terminalia arjuna bark, CoQ10 and resveratrol, which can help lower cholesterol, maintain blood pressure and support healthy blood flow to the heart. I want to keep my soul mate around as long as possible, so we’re making sure he sticks to a clean diet, gets plenty of exercise, takes his doctor-prescribed medications, and takes supplements that can give him some extra support.

I think most people know about the heart-healthy functions of most of these ingredients. But arjuna bark was a new one to me. Arjuna bark’s cardio-protective action comes from several of its constituents, such as glycosides, which strengthen contractions of heart muscle, and flavonoids, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cholesterol-lowering effects. Arjuna bark decreases chest pain, increases coronary artery flow, decreases blood pressure, and increases ejection fraction (the ratio of blood flowing through the left ventricle).

QOL VItaPQQ Review - Some of my Favorites from Quality of Life Supplements

Another supplement I really like is VitaPQQ. PQQ was discovered in 2003 and is considered the first new vitamin discovered since 1948. Isn’t it crazy how the health industry uncovers things like this? PQQ protects your mitochondria (ancient bacteria that lived with other living cells in a symbiotic way and then evolved to become the powerhouses of our cells) from damage, which can stave off fatigue, brain fog, oxidative stress, and overall health. There is SO much to learn about your mitochondria, and how we need to keep them healthy, create new ones, and even kill off weak ones. Mitochondria naturally get weaker and die off as we age, and it’s important to keep regenerating them. PQQ is one way to protect your mitochondria, but you can also follow a mitochondria-boosting diet, exercise regularly, keep inflammation down and get plenty of sunshine and sleep.

Do any of these supplements sound interesting to you? If you’d like to try these or any other Quality of Life supplements, you can use my code BUNNY15 for 15% off!
